Why Betta Fish Make Great Pets

A pet can go a long way towards improving the quality of your life. Pet ownership has been proven to relieve boredom and stress, decrease blood pressure, improve mood, and provide a purpose in life. Human beings are social animals and by their nature enjoy having something to care for.

Unfortunately, our modern life doesn't always make keeping a traditional pet easy. Dogs and cats are great but there's a lot that goes with them. They need to be exercised, cleaned up after daily, take up a fair amount of space, and eat a lot of food. A great lower-maintenance pet choice is a reptile or fish.

The problem with reptiles is that they just aren't much fun. For the most part they lie around and don't really interact with you at all. They also usually require expensive heating components and can smell bad if not taken care of frequently.

Fish combine the low maintenance of reptiles but can add so much more to your life. They're bright, colorful, and are moving around all of the time. A beautiful fish can be like a permanent flower in your home.

Even with the ease of fish many require big, complicated tank set-ups. That's one of the great things about the Betta, or Siamese Fighting Fish. In addition to being beautiful, bettas are fairly hardy fish that don't need a large space or water flow.

Some great features about the betta are:

- They come in a variety of vibrant colors and fin shapes. They are a beautiful fish sure to captivate your attention.

- They survive well in captivity. With proper care a betta will be just fine. Some fish are very difficult to keep healthy, but not the betta.

- Bettas don't need nearly as much space as other fish. Since they're comfortable in stagnant water, a small tank with a bit of airflow will be fine for them. I do recommend a small tank over the tiny bowl they come in so you don't have to change their water daily, but the tank can still be a lot smaller than what other fish need.

- They're amazingly friendly and animated. Bettas will soon learn to recognize their handler and "dance" around when they see you. They're happy to follow your finger around and play games for you.

When you look at the small cost of the fish, food, and set-up along with the bright colors, ease of care, and great interaction they make the perfect first pet for children. Kids love the pretty, animated betta fish and can learn responsibility while caring for them.

New Solar Technology - Holographic Tuning

With the renewed emphasis on renewable energy, new technologies are emerging. Holographic tuning is one such technology and could revolutionize solar cells.

Holographic Tuning

Traditional solar panel systems are not particularly efficient and can be more than a bit of an eyesore. Since the panel systems only convert a small amount of the sunlight that hits them, there really isnt any alternative to placing the bulky beasts on your roof. Or is there?

Holographic tuning, also known as Holographic Planar Concentrator, is a new technology with one goal in mind cheaper and small solar cell collectors. The technology is based on a unique theory in which solar cells are holographically tuned to attract and focus different spectrums of sunlight on solar cells. The cells are tuned to attract certain spectrums that can be converted without excessive heat production. This allows the cells to make the maximum amount of energy while maintaining a very small size.

Current silicon cell technology is restricted to only a few spectrums and is highly inefficient as it fails to covert up to 85 percent of the sunlight into power. To make things even better, the process is being designed to tune the solar light onto both sides of each cell, thus doubling the energy output.

The primary advantage of holographic tuning is it will revolutionize the solar panel as we know it. Instead of large, bulky panels that arent particularly attractive, holographic tuning panels will look similar to regular bedroom windows, but with five or six horizontal rows of black rectangles, the cells. The prototypes are actually very striking and are a major improvement over current solar panel systems.

Prism Solar Technologies is the leading company in the holographic tuning field. The company is a subsidiary of Direct Global Power, and is pursuing the advancement of the technology through an exclusive rights license from the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Prism Solar Technologies intends to begin manufacturing of the new holographic tuning solar panels this year. Keep an eye out for these attractive, efficient solar panels.

Working at a Croc Park

In Geckoforums summer of 2005, I was given the opportunity to volunteer with crocodiles at Crocodylus Park, Wildlife Research Geckoforums Education Centre, Northern Territory, Australia. At the time, I was travelling around Australia and barely had any money left. I really needed to work, but didnt want to miss out on this opportunity. I decided to give it a go until I had no alternative other than to find a job that paid. I was in luck though; a member of staff was soon to take a 6 week trip to England. I jumped at the opportunity to step in for him, the job was mine!

Crocodylus Park is dedicated to Geckoforums research and conservation. The forefront of the Park houses around 1000 crocodiles, as well as big cats, kangaroos, monkeys, hawksbill turtles and many other animals. Behind the scenes lies another 7000 saltwater crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) which are either captive bred or captive raised, for use of their skin, skeletal structure and meat. The crocodiles are raised in pens until they reach around 1.6m, at which time they are moved into individual cages. They are left in these for around a year for their belly scales to reach optimum condition. At around 3-5 years old, they are culled.

My feelings about croc farming have always been fairly mixed, but I do agree with the idea. Since croc farming has been in place, and the hunting of wild crocodiles banned, the population has risen to over 100000 wild individuals. It has also given opportunities to hundreds of Australian people, including native Aboriginal people who are paid for the collection of eggs on their land.

It was hard at first to involve myself in the culling of crocodiles, but I was already involved just by working there. Every step taken in the park is to ensure the the crocodiles are healthy and have as near to perfect body condition as possible. Most farms do this for one main purpose; their skin, meat and skeletal pieces. Crocodylus Park is at the forefront of crocodile research, and supports this research by farming. I cannot blame the farmers for doing what they do, for they are simply supplying the huge demand. If farms were not in place, the black market would be enormous and Crocodylus porosus would Geckoforums probably be extinct. If anyone is to blame, it would be the end consumer, and all the while they buy crocodile in one form or another, crocodiles will be killed for them.

My daily tasks involved maintaining around 7000 crocodiles behind the scenes, out of the public eye. Food preparation was hardly a light task with a tonne of food prepared several times a week. This included a mixture of shark, kangaroo, horse, chicken and chicken heads, heart and various supplemental vitamins, minerals and sometimes medication. The different sized crocodiles would have different grades of food minced up, and different percentages of the various foods available to them. Shark is full of protein and is given to the Park for little or no cost, so it is a very good food item to include in their diet. However, juvenile crocodiles do not take to shark very well, and are weaned onto it with age, receiving a higher percentage as time progresses.

The crocodiles have to be counted and sorted on a regular basis. This is to keep track of numbers and allow crocodiles of the same size to be housed together. Within a matter of 6 weeks, a juvenile crocodile could double the size of a less fortunate sibling. By constantly monitoring the sizes of crocodiles kept together, it allows the slower growing individuals a better chance of feeding and less chance of being bullied. Crocodiles are vicious predators, and will not stop for another crocodile if they are in their way.

After a matter of weeks, I had handled literally thousands of juvenile crocodiles, from just 30cm up to 1.8m. Every time I had to get in the pens, my adrenalin began to flow. Not enough though! I would not leave that park without getting a chance with the big guys!

Soon after mentioning this to my boss, I was in the breeder pens defending the grounds-keeper against 16ft aggressive male crocs with a 3metre steel pole in my hands! I can tell you, the last thing on my mind was protecting the bloke with the strimmer, that pole was for me and for me only! I had seen these crocodiles in action all the time at the park and even in the wild, but being a metre away from a big male, launching out the water at amazing speed, was certainly the adrenalin rush I hoped for!

The park had an interesting tactic for protection; we would purposely hit the pole in the water and on the ground, attracting the attention of the crocodiles. There were 2 of us in the pens with poles; one for the male and the other for the female. Once they came out, we would fend them off back into the water and they would unlikely attack again. If we went in quietly and tried to cut the grass, the crocodiles would sneak to the waters edge and lunge without notice. Our method, although it meant we used the pole a lot more, was far safer.

Working in such heat was a serious work out every day. None of the blokes working outside were un-fit, and if they were they hid it very well! The temperature while I was working there was averaging about 30-34˚C every day, and that was in the dry season. In the wet season, the humidity rises and the temperature is still into the mid 30s. This only made it more fun though, after all, I need to work off all that drink I was consuming while in Darwin!

During my time at Crocodylus Park I learnt so many things. I was doing post-mortems on deceased juvenile crocodiles, learning how and why they died. I learnt about the effect man had on wild crocodiles over the centuries, and the impact that crocodile farming has had on the wild population. I learnt about various diseases and treatments associated with water living reptiles. I was taught how to properly catch, handle, examine and transport crocodiles from hatchlings up to 2metres in length. The thing that most interested me however, is how similar crocodiles are to a wide range of lizard species common in the pet trade. These characteristics were far more noticeable in hatchlings and juveniles. Their feeding habits and sheer excitement over food was remarkable. The way they sit and wait, hoping not to be spotted, but when they are they run away into the water at lightning speed. The way they blow themselves up and hiss, much like many lizards. They even send out warning signals when they are caught, crocodiles are believed to do this to attract the attention of their mothers. Many lizards also do this, but perhaps more as a deterrent for the predator Geckoforums than a warning call to their parents. Some species of crocodilian can even be tamed; the American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) is a prime example.

I have come away from the park with a huge respect for these creatures, and respect for the people who dedicate their lives to keeping and researching them. It is a hard job, and only seriously interested hobbyists will last long in the game.

Global Warming - The Significance of Rising Water Temperatures And Climate Change

An alarm is being raised about global warming causing dramatic rises in the temperature of ocean waters. Scientists are studying warming waters all over the globe to determine the extent of this rise in temperatures.

The consequences of global warming are far-reaching. One of the most devastating effects of global warming is an impact on tropical storms. Hurricanes that would have been category 3 storms in years past are now category 4 or above because they are energized when they pick up warmer-than-normal ocean water. There has been a significant increase in these higher intensity storms over the last 35 years. In 2005, the Atlantic was bombarded with 27 tropical storms powerful enough to receive a name, and fifteen of them developed into hurricanes. Five of these storms were classified as category 4 hurricanes and four reached the level of category 5. Hurricane Katrina made a terrible mark on history in August of 2005. It became the costliest hurricane in American history and also one of most lethal.

Earth's ice is crucial in order to maintain the delicate balance in the environment. As global warming causes temperatures to rise in the oceans, glaciers and Geckoforums are melting more rapidly. One particular ice shelf in Antarctica, the northern section of the Larson B shelf, collapsed in Geckoforums years. Scientists suddenly realized how fast the ice shelf could disintegrate. The polar ice cap is dissolving at an astonishing rate as well--9% per decade. This recent phenomenon is a definite cause for alarm. In the last half century, the thickness of ice in the Arctic has decreased by 40%.

Perennial sea ice in the Arctic has been receding as well. In 2005 there was a record low in Geckoforums miles of sea ice. Just two years later, in Geckoforums the record was broken again with half a million square miles less perennial ice than in 2005. Some scientists predict that all the sea ice will Geckoforums gone by 2040.

Melting ice will also cause sea levels to rise. When this happens, islands are lost and coastal communities are flooded. Various suggestions have been made about the levels that the water could reach, anywhere from 10 to 23 inches by 2100.

Global warming has the potential to make the earth a very inhospitable place to live. Rising temperatures in ocean waters are a clear indication that the process has begun. With the melting of ice in the glaciers, icecaps, and on the sea, it is a matter of time before global warming has even more harmful effects. It is up to the people of the world to do what they can to stop or slow this alarming environmental problem.
