Miracles Of Dolphin Assisted Therapy Research

What is dolphin assisted therapy research? It is a special mix of zoo therapy and physiotherapy that also provides important information for research. The animals used in this type of therapy are trained dolphins.

Who uses this type of therapy? It is usually people with special needs. It has been very popular with children affected or suffering from Autism, Cerebral Palsy, cancer and Multiple Sclerosis. Verbal or non-verbal, with or without sight, paralyzed or with limited motor skills, miracles have been observed or linked with this type of therapy.

Charitable organizations such as the Make-a-Wish Foundation have made dreams come true for numerous children. You see, children are often attracted and intrigued by these marine mammals. As for dolphins, they are naturally curious, patient, protective and sociable animals, which explain their main attraction to humans.

If a pregnant woman, a defenseless child or a physically handicapped adult are put in their presence, dolphins are known to come to their rescue and protect them, no matter the consequences.

During the assisted dolphin therapy research sessions, a physiotherapist and a dolphin trainer, who often is a marine biologist, are present to supervise series of physical exercises. Dolphins provide the rest: patience, support, entertainment and a unique relationship.

With time, various miracles have been known to happen during these sessions. Non-verbal patients have said their first words; others have shown some interest in communicating with them and developing a close relationship. Others became affectionate while some developed their motor skills. For some children, dolphin assisted therapy research made their dreams come true by giving them the opportunity to go swimming with dolphins. For others, it meant hope, achieving goals, develop their skills or find a best friend.

While miracles have been happening during dolphin assisted therapy research sessions, it does not mean that they are guaranteed to happen but at least, the experience in itself, its uniqueness and the fun related to it make it worthwhile.

In fact, numerous parents, relatives and friends would tell you that, at least, it makes a dream come true and at best, it will bring to your loved one something more precious than all the money in the world: a miracle that changed a life.

Nowadays, several places offer either dolphin assisted therapy research, a chance to go swimming with dolphins or even the opportunity to become a dolphin trainer for a day. If you have one of these opportunities, you should take it as it will provide you with the experience of a lifetime. For once, you will see that the cost of such an opportunity is worth every penny. Write it down on your To Do List for your next vacation as you will not regret it!

Paternity Testing - Are You Raising Someone Else's Child?

The dawn of the DNA test

Back in the 1700s, the best way to determine paternity was by a good hard look and the child, followed by a good hard look at the father. Enough coincidences and maybe a relationship could be proposed. A hundred years later, eye color was discovered to be a paternity identifier. This theory has had its flaws exposed because of recent DNA advances. We now know that eye color is determined by at least six alleles, or genetic markers. Paternity testing has become a lot easier and affordable over the past few years due to advances in DNA science. Although an estimated 200,000 DNA tests are conducted each year by states needing to sort child-support and welfare issues, few people are willing to conduct their own at-home paternity test. They don't realize the simplicity and convenience of an at-home paternity test.

How does a home DNA test work?

Paternity testing requires a painless sample from both the child and possible father. Even without a sample from the mother, DNA paternity test results are up to 99.9999% accuratethat's one-in-a-million odds your results are incorrect. Most companies provide a free home kit for you to provide the samples and require you to send the kit back to the laboratory with the accompanying fee.

Because many companies are aware of the discomfort of drawing blood from a child in order to get a sample, buccal (mouth) swabs are being accepted as an alternative. By gently massaging the inside of the child's mouth, cheek cells are collected. These cells are then sent to the lab for testing. Labs analyze up to sixteen genetic markers of the child and match them against the markers of the alleged father. Because each of us receives half our genetic markers from each parent, the results of DNA paternity testing are still accurate without the DNA information of the mother. Most labs will have results in 10 days and charge about $290 for a basic paternity verification test.

What else can a DNA test do?

DNA kits can also be used to analyze siblingship, establish cousin or grandparent relationships, determine twin zygosity (i.e. whether twins are fraternal or identical), identify ancestral origin, verify Native American decent, assure parents they left the hospital with the right baby, and most important, provide legal evidencebe prepared to pay a bit more for legal tests. Legal tests can be used to settle adoption issues, settle child-support disputes, and provide information for immigration files.

How to choose a DNA laboratory

  • Accreditation is a vital part of choosing a laboratory. Accredited labs have an annual audit and inspection, undergo internal and external reviews, and have their equipment calibrated for accuracy. Look for an ISO and/or AABB certification. Accredited labs will have a good reputation and near 100% track record for court cases.
  • Look for hidden fees. Some companies will charge you for the kit and then charge you again for the results. Also, double check when you order your kit that you're only buying the results you need.
  • Ask about privacy. Make sure that your identity and intentions are kept secure.
  • Enjoy piece of mind

Be confident that the questions you have can be answered. DNA testing is safe and stress-free. Find a free kit and an information packet and you're on your way to getting the piece of mind that you deserve.

Science Projects Should Be Fun and Informative

It's very difficult for a parent to stand on the sidelines and watch their child work on a complicated science project without trying to jump in and take over. Even though the temptation is always there, parents must only help; they should not get in the way. The key to a child's successful learning about science, or anything for that matter, is for the parents to do their part to guide, not drive.

For basic elementary science projects, all that parents really need do is help the child get started, assist with the presentation and ensure that proper recording of events takes place. The presentation part is where a parent can really assist, but before that, a project really needs to be the child's for the youngster to learn. Resist the urge to take over, but remain active.

Here's how a parent can guide without getting too involved:

    * The first step in any science project, elementary level or otherwise, is to come up with a project. Science projects don't have to be earth shattering to be effective. The entire concept is to teach a youngster how to reason out a problem and come to a conclusion on his or her own. With this in mind, it's often more than acceptable to recreate tried and true projects, such as seedlings' responses to different types of light, what type of water enables better floating and so on. Let the child come up with the project, but guide him or her in a direction of one that you know he or she can handle. Too complicated and the child can become frustrated; too boring and the lessons won't be learned.

    * Make sure your youngster is following instructions. Ask to see the details of the assignment and guide the child along the path to getting this done. Oftentimes, school science teachers will ask for a child to first present a question and then seek to solve it. This involves setting up an experiment, watching it and recording it. Sometimes three repeats of the same project are needed to help prove or deny the theory the child sets forth. Remind the child here the hypothesis, or theory, is meant to be a guess and it's OK for that guess to be proven wrong. That's the whole point of science!

    * Assist with the presentation. If your youngster has followed directions correctly, she will likely have a question formulated the project is supposed to answer, a guess at that answer and a series of recorded data that covers the extent of the project and possibly some pictures of the action. It is now time to create a workable visual presentation that shows what the project was about, gives the results in a nutshell and makes it easy for anyone to understand what was done and why. Follow school instructions here as they may vary.

The temptation to get in and take over a child's project to ensure they have the "best" might be high, but that takes away from the valuable lessons a youngster learns through these efforts. Science projects not only teach lessons about science itself, they also help a child develop a sense of wonder, reason and an ability to question their surroundings.

Moses The Turtle and My Arrogance

Years ago, I owned a turtle named "Moses". We had a special relationship that scared my family because I would hold Moses right in front of my face and kiss him. They were always afraid Moses would, as most reptiles do, jerk his tongue out and sting me. But he never did! He crawled on my chest and nestled in my neck, feeling safe with me. I loved Moses more than I can describe.

I took him outside with me every day, allowing him to get sunshine and eat bugs as I trimmed my trees and hedges. The back yard was totally fenced in, so I never dreamed he would get out. But the inevitable happened one day. Moses was no where to be found, and I cried for weeks.

About eight months later, I was digging weeds out of the flower bed in the front yard, and my shovel hit something hard. Thinking it a rock, I reached down to get it with my hands and was shocked beyond belief to find dear old Moses under the dirt! How had he survived without me to feed him?

It's amazing how arrogant we humans can be! God created turtles to survive on their own to the ripe old age of 50 or 60 years of age! He "programmed" each species to survive without the help of human beings. Yet I, in my arrogance, thought God needed me to help Him out with His plan!

I learned a lot from Moses after that. I learned how awesome our mutual Creator is! There is nothing that slipped by Him when He was creating all creatures great and small -- no detail He wasn't aware of!

I learned how valuable hibernation is. Just look at the seasons God created: Spring bursts forth with new life only because of the root growth during the "barren" season of Winter.

I learned to hold possessions much looser. Possessions can be lost, or they can die, or they can obstruct my view of God Almighty.

I will always remember Moses and our unique relationship. To this day, I have a wonderful "turtle collection" on my furniture to remind me that in the fairy tale, it was the focused slower creature that won the race. I will always be grateful for the lessons I learned from loving Moses.
